Austin home repair and improvement
Outdoor wood structures need different repairs but share many weather, material and access considerations.
Fences and decks are often requested together because both use exterior lumber and face the same Austin sun, storms and moisture. Their functions are different, however. A fence depends on posts, rails and panels for privacy and alignment. A deck must support foot traffic through boards, joists, stairs and railings. The first review should identify which system is affected instead of treating all visible wood damage the same way.
Loose pickets can be replaced when rails and posts remain sound. Leaning panels, repeated gate sag and movement at ground level suggest that the supporting parts also need attention. Gate photographs should show hinges, latch, diagonal bracing and ground clearance. New cedar will initially look brighter than weathered boards, so the expected appearance should be discussed.
A split deck board may be an isolated repair, but loose rail posts, soft stair treads or repeated fastener problems require a wider look. Photographs from below can reveal connections that are hidden from the walking surface. Replacement boards must match thickness and width so they do not create uneven edges.
Pressure washing and coating can improve sound wood, but neither restores decay or loose connections. Cleaning strength should match the age and material, and repaired areas need appropriate drying and preparation before stain or paint.

Review boards, stairs, railings, fasteners and nearby framing.
For fences, measure the panel width and show both sides of the damaged section. For decks, include the board dimensions and photographs of stairs, rails and the underside where accessible. Mention whether matching lumber or stain remains from earlier work.
Exterior cleaning, wood replacement, caulk and coatings may need different weather conditions. The repair list should identify which result is most important so the work can be ordered correctly.
